Fabulous 4th of July Style!

It is almost here, July 4th.This is the one time a year that I get a little carried away and indulge in some red, white and blue mania.Being an immigrant whose journey to citizenship was pretty arduous,I never take this day for granted.I am very proud to call this country my home and celebrate 32 years as a resident of New York City.

It is such a fine line between creating a fabulous fashion forward patriotic look or ending up with something that looks like it escaped from a parade. If you want to rock some over the top patriotic style by all means go for it.This is one occasion that you can get away with it.I know we are all not feeling our best with a pandemic going on but do take some time to pull together a great outfit.

If you are interested in the above outfit that I designed check out https://storylinecollection.com/

For most of us it is about a balance between showing off our patriotism and being stylish. To find the right balance I looked to the stars of movies and music for inspiration.

So if you are in the mood for  displaying some all out 4th of July madness or just a subtle hint of your patriotic spirit. Here are 5 tips to do it right.

White is such a clean refreshing palette to base you outfit on.It is cool crisp and comfortable.Finish it off with a touch of red and blue.It is one of the key colors for this Summer and is now a year round color.Check out the White Hero Jacket that goes with everything my design for Storyline Collection.https://storylinecollection.com/products/hero-jacket

Picking one motif and making it your central theme, creates a look that is sophisticated and polished, take a cue from these celebrities and create just one focal point to your outfit.Mix this with one of two classic american fabrics, chambray or denim.

Instead of just draping yourself in a flag which concerns some people as being too much or disrespectful, designers have created artistic interpretations that capture the spirit of it while respecting it.Look for something that is more interesting and flattering.Tie dye versions are the must have.

There are so many fabulous accessories out there that feature the flag.Go for a great head to toe solid white, red or blue outfit and then punch it with a flag bag or shoe.Subtle but very effective in creating a stylish outfit.I usually tend to take this route myself. There are so any fantastic options.

With all the creativity that is going on with nails, this is the place to go crazy. So get some patriotic nail art and pair with a crisp white shirt and a great pair of jeans to get the ultimate understated wow outfit.

The great news is all of these tips work for the men in your life as well maybe not so much tip number 5 but I know a few rockstar dudes that can make it work.I got a great tee from J Crew, keeping it simple.

But the main thing to remember is to celebrate what an amazing country we are because it is our diversity that makes us so great.

Happy Independence Day

How to look cute when it is cold outside!

Major winter weather is here and some of you have had almost 2 weeks of below freezing temperatures. We are expecting record low temperatures starting today all over the United States and Canada.

Winter is no excuse to look like a Bag lady or a Michelin man just to stay warm.Style never freezes.Staying warm and cozy means piling on the layers but once inside you may encounter near tropical temperatures.Your look has to work both indoors and outside.

Layering adds complexity to a fashionista’s quest to maintain a certain level of chic.Just getting in and out of layers tends to mess up hair, makeup and general decorum. If you are not careful you can end up looking and feeling like a very messy layer cake.

The solution?

Follow these simple 5 steps to stay fashionable, chic and comfortable no matter how low the temperature drops.

1.Choose your base layer wisely.

Most people think no one is going to see it so why bother and then you get to a really hot office or department store and have to strip down.Your first layer should be

  • Soft, absorbent and great feeling against your skin.Cotton,Merino and Cashmere are all great fabrics for a base layer.
  • Have a close to the body fit and can stand alone if needed.Leggings and Tights are are great under pants and skirts.
  • Be in a skin flattering color.
2.Your layers should work together.
  • Your next layer should be easy on,easy off to not destroy hair and make up.Zip and button fronts work really well,as to cowls and deep necklines.
  • Your pieces should all have the same feel or spirit working together and standing alone.Make sure they all have the same mood.
  • Lay out all the pieces on the bed and do a quick check before you put them on.
  • If it is really cold go with a chunky wool sweater as it traps air.
3.Create interesting color stories.
  • Stick to the same color family with one pop color.Start mixing in a Spring piece or two.
  • If you choose to go monochromatic mix up your textures or else your outfit will look flat.Avoid all black if you can.
  • Pay attention to your skin tone, most people get paler in the winter so something that looked great 3 months ago may not work right now.
4.Pay attention to fit.
  • Every layer should be figure flattering,as you go up make sure each layer is slightly bigger.
  • Nothing looks worse than jamming four layers under a jacket or coat that was made for one.The stuffed sausage look is one of the most common layering mistakes.Opt for a wrap coat or a poncho that can take many layers and look good. The good news is technical innovations in fabric and construction have created coats that are super warm and thin at the same time. They are pricey but worth the investment.Look for a more classic style that will not go out of date.
  • Make sure you have mobility especially that you can drive once you get in to a car.
5.Make sure to ice the  layer cake which is your outfit.
  • Your final layer is the most important,Do not fall in to the trap of “I am going to take my coat off when I get there so let me just throw on this old super warm thing”This is  a common mistake. You will run in to several people before you get your coat off it is Murphy’s law.Match your coat to your look;have a great sporty coat for day that goes well with jeans and pants and have a dressier one for night that works with dresses and skirts. For most occasions the ideal top layer is an easy fitting coat that looks stylish no matter how many layers lie beneath.
  • Have fun with accessories, make sure you always have a great scarf and gloves that complement your outfit. A stylish hat will keep you warm and chic. You lose a lot of your body heat from your head so choose one that fits well. Faux fur is a big trend this season and keeps you super warm.Carry a bigger handbag that will allow you to store a layer until you need it.
  • Boots are the way to go for footwear. They really complete a layered look and can be both warm and stylish.Make sure you get a pair with great traction because a fashionista must always be upright.Carry your cute heels in your bigger bag for when you get to your destination.

Effortless Style all Summer!

With Summer almost upon us.Here are ten tips to great Summer style.

Do not use the heat and humidity as an excuse to lose your sense of style.Summer is very often the busiest time of year for a lot of women and keeping things fresh and simple is the way to go.

1. Keep it light and layered

Simple and interesting is the key. Always have a cardigan, jacket or light wrap handy for those fluctuating temperatures as many places have their air conditioning on full blast. Make sure every piece in your outfit can stand on its own.

2. Crisp

Always have a white cotton shirt handy it goes with everything. If you do not own one steal one from a man in your life.Throw it over your outfit to hide what is underneath.

3. Stay Chic

All that fabulous color and print but watch out not all of it works for your skin tones specially early on. When in doubt go black and white. Style icons love this classic combo for a reason. Feel free to pop it with a touch of red, pink or yellow they are all 3 summers must have colors.

4. Be well shod for summer

Bright colors and great patterns, Block heels and wedges, Matte and shine, This year has yielded a bounty of stunning summer shoes.

5. Belt it

The skinny belt or chain belt is your friend. It instantly dresses up even the most casual tank top and gives you definition when you wear something loose and flowy.

6. Invest in Summer Bling

Simple dramatic accessories and summer are the perfect fit. One statement piece like a long layered necklace or a dramatic earring is great. Keep it simple. A powerful style statement this summer is just one dramatic cuff.

7. Go bagalicious

Summer fashion tends to be minimal so make your bag a statement. For evening go really small with a clutch mini cross body or a mini drawstring. For day go big with a bright bucket, graphic tote or a soft leather hobo.

8. So fresh

Keep summer makeup light fresh, fabulous and with SPF.Just a touch to keep you on point.Focus either on the eyes or lips, never the whole face.

9. ”Made” with the right shades” and hat

A face flattering pair of quality sunglasses is essential for fashion and eye protection. So is the perfect hat.

10. Scarf 911

Always have one or two handy. They work as a great cover up, can battle a bad hair day as a headband, headwrap or tie or add a touch of print and polish to a simple outfit.
