How to look cute when it is cold outside!

Major winter weather is here and some of you have had almost 2 weeks of below freezing temperatures. We are expecting record low temperatures starting today all over the United States and Canada.

Winter is no excuse to look like a Bag lady or a Michelin man just to stay warm.Style never freezes.Staying warm and cozy means piling on the layers but once inside you may encounter near tropical temperatures.Your look has to work both indoors and outside.

Layering adds complexity to a fashionista’s quest to maintain a certain level of chic.Just getting in and out of layers tends to mess up hair, makeup and general decorum. If you are not careful you can end up looking and feeling like a very messy layer cake.

The solution?

Follow these simple 5 steps to stay fashionable, chic and comfortable no matter how low the temperature drops.

1.Choose your base layer wisely.

Most people think no one is going to see it so why bother and then you get to a really hot office or department store and have to strip down.Your first layer should be

  • Soft, absorbent and great feeling against your skin.Cotton,Merino and Cashmere are all great fabrics for a base layer.
  • Have a close to the body fit and can stand alone if needed.Leggings and Tights are are great under pants and skirts.
  • Be in a skin flattering color.
2.Your layers should work together.
  • Your next layer should be easy on,easy off to not destroy hair and make up.Zip and button fronts work really well,as to cowls and deep necklines.
  • Your pieces should all have the same feel or spirit working together and standing alone.Make sure they all have the same mood.
  • Lay out all the pieces on the bed and do a quick check before you put them on.
  • If it is really cold go with a chunky wool sweater as it traps air.
3.Create interesting color stories.
  • Stick to the same color family with one pop color.Start mixing in a Spring piece or two.
  • If you choose to go monochromatic mix up your textures or else your outfit will look flat.Avoid all black if you can.
  • Pay attention to your skin tone, most people get paler in the winter so something that looked great 3 months ago may not work right now.
4.Pay attention to fit.
  • Every layer should be figure flattering,as you go up make sure each layer is slightly bigger.
  • Nothing looks worse than jamming four layers under a jacket or coat that was made for one.The stuffed sausage look is one of the most common layering mistakes.Opt for a wrap coat or a poncho that can take many layers and look good. The good news is technical innovations in fabric and construction have created coats that are super warm and thin at the same time. They are pricey but worth the investment.Look for a more classic style that will not go out of date.
  • Make sure you have mobility especially that you can drive once you get in to a car.
5.Make sure to ice the  layer cake which is your outfit.
  • Your final layer is the most important,Do not fall in to the trap of “I am going to take my coat off when I get there so let me just throw on this old super warm thing”This is  a common mistake. You will run in to several people before you get your coat off it is Murphy’s law.Match your coat to your look;have a great sporty coat for day that goes well with jeans and pants and have a dressier one for night that works with dresses and skirts. For most occasions the ideal top layer is an easy fitting coat that looks stylish no matter how many layers lie beneath.
  • Have fun with accessories, make sure you always have a great scarf and gloves that complement your outfit. A stylish hat will keep you warm and chic. You lose a lot of your body heat from your head so choose one that fits well. Faux fur is a big trend this season and keeps you super warm.Carry a bigger handbag that will allow you to store a layer until you need it.
  • Boots are the way to go for footwear. They really complete a layered look and can be both warm and stylish.Make sure you get a pair with great traction because a fashionista must always be upright.Carry your cute heels in your bigger bag for when you get to your destination.

Fashion Resolutions you must make!

Yes,it is that time of year that we all make resolutions and then forget about them in the next few weeks. There are 3 style resolutions you must make and keep for the rest of your life.

1.Never ever dress your age.

You may think I am going to be 50 or 60 or 70,so I have to tone down my style or may be it is not as important to pay attention to what I wear specially since I am now retired.Women are living longer and are in amazing shape and there is no reason to let your style age. Here are the steps you can take to maintain Ageless Style.

a.Be inspired by the new guard.

Most of us look to our mothers or even grandmothers for inspiration on how to dress when you get older.Do not do that!Fashion rules have changed dramatically.Dressing your age is an absolute No! No!.Look to our current crop of stylish women who are breaking every rule.60 is the new 40 and some of my fashion icons are well into their 70’s.

We take care of our bodies more nowadays with better nutrition and fitness so there is no need to give up and buy some shapeless housecoats or mumus.

If you are celebrating your 80’s this year look to someone like Carmen Dell’Orefice who at 85 is one of the world’s most sought after supermodels, she is booked months in advance.

I love these 3 women, they make 70 seem like an age you must get to so that you can be this fierce.

Like I said 60 is the new 40 and these 3 icons prove it over and over again.

b.Constantly Evolve.

You must constantly assess yourself.Style is a lifelong journey.Your body changes as you age,so take the time to measure your body even if you have maintained the same weight.Know your body and always dress the body you have.Take stock of your strengths and showcase them.Take what works for you but constantly update it.One of the reasons women look old is because they are stuck in a rut specially when it comes to hair and makeup. On most women the tops of the shoulders always look amazing make sure you showcase that.Legs are another part of the body that never seem to age on most women, so do wear short dresses and leggings.

c.Pay attention to Color.

As we age our skin becomes more translucent so certain colors wash us out.Do not fall in to the all black trap, yes it is flattering but it can create a harsh contrast especially in the winter.Go for earthy neutrals like Chocolate,Warm grey and Rich Camel.Jewel tones are the way to go Ruby Red,Sapphire blue,Amethyst Purple and Emerald Green should be your go to colors.Stay away from Yellow,Beige and Neon colors they can wash you out. Also pay attention to your hair color and makeup colors.Brunettes should get warmer with their hair color as you grow older and lips reds should get softer.Stop into a department store every 2 years or so and have your makeup colors reevaluated by a professional.

d.Invest in Timeless Pieces.

Fabric,Quality and Cut are what you need to look for.You need fewer pieces as you get older but they should be the best you can afford. They should also fit you to a T.Do splurge on the services of a good tailor or find a friend who can sew. Here are some great basics you should build on.

  1. A Hero Jacket that goes with everything.
  2. A perfect black dress that can work for a wedding,an interview or a funeral.
  3. An amazing pair of pants in black and navy.
  4. An outstanding coat.
  5. A couple of flawless cashmere or merino sweaters.
  6. A crisp tailored white shirt.
  7. Soft silk blouses in red and blue.
  8. A great pair of jeans in a dark wash.
  9. A flattering black skirt.
  10. A quality black shoe and bag.

These become the foundation of your wardrobe and you can pair them with less expensive pieces. As we get tailoring and structure look better on us that loose oversize drapey clothing. The most flattering outfits are ones that mix a tailored piece with a soft piece. This is how french women look so amazing at every age.

e.Pile on the accessories.

Take a lesson from Iris Apfel who at 95 is one of the most influential fashion icons. As you grow older your clothing should become simpler and your accessories should become wilder.Go big and bold do not be afraid of making a statement. When looking to being current trends into your wardrobe first do it with an accessory and if you love it then go for it in a piece of clothing. This works great with print and pattern.

f.Understand trends and how they relate to you.

Trends come and go and in your lifetime you will see the same trends over and over again. You can wear most trends but each time you wear the trend you have to do it in a different way.

g.Rethink your Shoes

As you age your tendons in your heel are less flexible so it becomes really hard to wear heels, most women give up at that point and switch to shoes that are all about comfort. There are several shoes out there right now that do not sacrifice style for comfort so take the time to find the right shoes. For  daily running around invest in a good hybrid sneaker,it is a sneaker that is made of materials reserved for dressy shoes like leather and suede,it is usually very chic and simple. For work a girly loafer ot a slight heeled bootie adds polish and for evening opt for a sweet kitten heel.Do pay attention to your shoes as they are the pedestal that displays your whole outfit.Do try to wear some kind of a heel. Most clothing other than activewear is fit with some kind of heel so your clothes do look better with a slight lift.

2.Dress the body you have

We always tend to dress the body we had or the body we plan to have,so take the time to assess what your body actually is and then dress it accordingly.

Current research is showing that there are close to 12 different body shapes out there but a majority of women fall in to the 7 body shapes listed below for each body shape I have given a brief do’s and don’ts.These are just suggestions based on my experiences working with all kinds of women over the last 30 years. The only rule is to is know that you are truly unique and beautiful and it is all about loving what you have and rocking it.

These are just guidelines to help you showcase and understand your uniquely beautiful body.So have fun with this and just know something’s may be better for you and others may be better left alone.

This most common body type close to 40% of women rock this shape.

This is the most desired body shape by both men and women.

Dolly Parton celebrates this shape in song

Fashion loves your body shape

May be one of the more challenging body shapes to dress but looks amazing when done right.

Well as they say you are destined to catch someone’s eye.You do find tall Apples but it is most common among petite women.

One of the least common body types but fun to dress.

3.Make your wardrobe simple.

Clothing should be a source of joy never a point of stress. So organize your clothing into groups.

1.Your everyday staples.research has shown that Women wear 20% of their clothing 80% of the time.Identify this clothing for you and then organize it by color in the center of your closet.Create an easy capsule collection, here is one I have created for you https://storylinecollection.com/

2.Take a hard look at the rest,if you have not worn something in 2019,you are not going to wear it in 2020 so get rid of it.

3.Organize your special occasion clothing to one side of your closet by category dresses, pants, skirts and tops.Do the same with your weekend clothes and put it at the other end.

4.All basics like underwear,t shirts, leggings etc should be folded organized by color and put away in a dresser.

5.Same logic applies to shoes, put the ones you wear daily in the center of your closet right under your main clothes, special occasion organized by color goes under that section and weekend goes under that section

This will make getting ready a lot less stressful,so be ready to tackle this year with 3 fashion resolutions firmly in place.

How to travel in style with Storyline!

Starting next week we head into the busiest travel season of the year.It was just reported that an extra 4 million people are traveling this year at Christmas compared to last year.I have created the perfect Holiday Travel Capsule at Storyline to help you do this. Please check it out https://storylinecollection.com/

I believe that you should always travel in style. If you look like you belong in first class you just might end up there. With all the turmoil happening with the airlines right now it is so important to look pulled together and just plain fierce(people are less likely to mess with you).It is important to look fabulous on your flight and at your destination as well.Remember you take many more pictures when you travel and all those social media posts.

They key is what you pack, how you pack and what you wear.Never check a bag unless you absolutely have to.The cost for checked bags goes up almost every month, plus there is all the time you end up waiting for them.In addition if you have a checked bag you have a lot less flexibility to change a flight. With so much luggage going missing or not arriving with you you are much better off having everything you need in the palm of your hand specially if there is a delay. Here are the a,b,c’s of a great travel wardrobe.

A.What to pack.

1-Create a color story for your trip,it should not be more than 2 0r 3 main colors and a pop color or print. This will ensure that everything goes with each other.Your pop should mostly be in tops, stick to dark colors on the bottom. Here are some color stories that are trending right now.Your color story should be in harmony with the nature of your trip. This is essentially creating a travel capsule which we have done for you at Storyline.Do the same  with your accessories. Here is our travel capsule it is black, red and an on trend Electric Lilly print.

2-Pay attention to fabrication, try to pack as many wrinkle resistant fabrics as possible, our jersey is wrinkle proof.Stay away from linens, silks and certain  wools they do not travel well.Stick to jersey, ponte and fabrics that drape well. Also put the clothes you pack on a diet,Look for the thinnest fabrics that provide the most warmth especially when it comes to fleece and outerwear.Lay out your outfit combinations and take pictures on your phone. For cold weather travel look for ultra lightweight thinsulate or down jackets and coats.

3-Pack your work horse pieces.Everything you choose should have at least an 80 % chance of being used.Black pants, jersey tops and pieces that can recreate a little black dress look all fall into this category. Also pack convertible pieces, these are pieces that can be worn more than one way.Check out our Wide Leg Jersey Pants with Pockets that zip closed.https://storylinecollection.com/products/wide-leg-pant

4-Pack lots of accessories.Bling gives you major bang for your buck when you are traveling. It is small, but can completely transform a simple dress or top.make sure you pack at least 3 statement pieces. It is also important to make sure the pieces go with your color story.Do pack a couple of belts as well.Make sure you pack a mix of casual, sporty and dressy accessories that go together. Here is an example of a great accessory story.

5-Scarves are your secret weapon to traveling light and looking fabulous. They are incredibly light and fold into the smallest squares.they can be tucked into any spare corner you have.Make sure you have a solid one,a printed one and an embellished one. They can become belts, hats, shirts or tops in an instant. Here are a couple of cheat sheets that show you how.

6.I say this with much pain!Limit the number of shoes you pack, they weigh the most and take up the most space. Do not pack any uncomfortable shoes.Right now you should pack a heel in a  metallic shade, nude or black for evening,a comfortable all weather day shoe the and a light athletic waterproof sneaker for walking around or working out .You should wear your boots as they are the hardest to back but make sure they come on and off easily for security. So 3 pairs that is all that goes in your bag.Make sure you pack a  small clutch that goes with your heels for evening. Also pack a lightweight foldable backpack for day trips or the gym. Here is an example of a story.

B.How to pack.

1-Layout everything on your bed including the outfit you are going to travel in.Count you should have at least 3 tops for every bottom.make sure all the colors sit in harmony. The reason you put your travel outfit on the bed is to make sure it goes with the pieces you pack. Here is how you can add your favourite jeans and cami along with the 5 pieces from the Storyline collection to create 10 looks.

2.Pack using zip lock bags and roll your clothes, squeeze out any excess air.Delicate knits should be wrapped in tissue paper to prevent them from getting snagged. If you travel with a jacket turn it inside out and fold the shoulders in before you roll.(you cannot do this with men’s jackets).

3.Start with you shoes laying them toe to heel at the bottom of your bag.Stuff them with underwear, scarves and belts. Not only does this make efficient use of space, this helps the shoe keep its shape.

4.Resist any last minute urges to pack extras.Your clothing will expand as you wear it and the most important thing is you have to leave room to shop”.

C.What to wear.

1-Comfort and Style is your mantra.Poly/Spandex blends are the best to travel in.Make sure the fabric drapes well and does not cling.Do opt for an elastic waist and pockets are a plus.Keep your outfit monochromatic and in a dark color. Our flirty skirt is perfect as it has pockets that zip and when paired with the turnaround top becomes a LBD.Here is the link to it https://storylinecollection.com/products/flirty-skirt

2. Always have a shawl/scarf with you airplanes are cold and this is a much more stylish way to stay warm rather than an airplane blanket.Plus you can do something fun with it when you get to your destination.

3.Sunglasses,a great handbag and a touch of fragrance is also a must.Do have lipstick and moisturizer handy to apply throughout the flight.

4.If you take off your shoes or your most outer layer make sure they are easy to put back on.

5.Put a small pillowcase in the pocket of your coat,Fold your coat and use it as a pillow during the flight. This will keep it clean and you will not have to stuff it in the overhead compartment.

D.When you get to your destination.

1.Unpack everything and hang what you can.If anything is wrinkled take it to the bathroom and hang it on your door while you shower. Most of the wrinkles should come out.Travel with a small bottle of Downy Wrinkle release, this helps if something gets really wrinkled. Also travel with shout pen or wipes.A portable steamer is also a must have.In a pinch your hotel hair dryer can help get wrinkles out.Spray a little water on the garment and blow on low.Have some Shout wipes or a pen to deal with stains.

2.Make sure you take out all the items from your shoes and lay out your accessories on a table(not the real stuff).

3.Plan your outfits for the next few days and hang them in order, review pictures of them on you phone so you do not forget the combinations you came up with.

Feeling and looking gorgeous when you travel is as easy as A,B,C and D with Storyline!

Love, Sunil

Must have colors for Fall!

Yes,it is hard to accept Fall is here and in some parts of North America snow is on the ground. In New York City we are still very firmly in Summer with everyone walking around in Shorts and  Tees. The stores however have turned over to the new season.

So that brings up the burning question as to what colors you should slowly start bringing into your wardrobe.Black,Grey and Deep shades of Brown are Fall classics and are the backbone of a great style statement so hopefully you have plenty of them in your wardrobe. Now for the Pop Colors.

The number one color once again is Red,no surprise here power red has been leading 3 seasons in a row and is well on it’s way to becoming a fall neutral joining black, grey and Brown in the hall of fame.If you are only able to add one color this season make it a shade of Red.

Pink is always a great Fall pop color as it mixes so well with the big 3 (Black,Grey and Brown). This season punch it up with Red,which was the big trend at the Emmys last week or shock it with a bright orange. If you are not a pink girl then go for just a touch in a great bag or shoe.

Pumpkin everything is a Fall mantra and so is Orange. This seasons must have according to Pantone is a Tiger Orange.Bold,Bright and Beautiful it is not for a wallflower.I liked it mixed with Navy,Grey and Chocolate, avoid mixing it with black as that is a little bit too Halloween.

Purple is the new Red,that great contrast that can liven any monochromatic outfit and this season all shades are in from a Dark Royal to a Deep Lavender. It is the must mix color with Grey and I love it with Brown.

Nothing lights up a great Fall outfit that a piece of Winter White. This season it is all about a rich creamy Vanilla.Pantone’s must have is called Vanilla Custard and is so chic and smooth.Wear it head to toe or mix in with almost any shade to elevate your outfit. It is a big color for accessories this season as well.

So have fun with color and brighten up your day!
