Fabulous 4th of July Style!

It is almost here, July 4th.This is the one time a year that I get a little carried away and indulge in some red, white and blue mania.Being an immigrant whose journey to citizenship was pretty arduous,I never take this day for granted.I am very proud to call this country my home and celebrate 32 years as a resident of New York City.

It is such a fine line between creating a fabulous fashion forward patriotic look or ending up with something that looks like it escaped from a parade. If you want to rock some over the top patriotic style by all means go for it.This is one occasion that you can get away with it.I know we are all not feeling our best with a pandemic going on but do take some time to pull together a great outfit.

If you are interested in the above outfit that I designed check out https://storylinecollection.com/

For most of us it is about a balance between showing off our patriotism and being stylish. To find the right balance I looked to the stars of movies and music for inspiration.

So if you are in the mood for  displaying some all out 4th of July madness or just a subtle hint of your patriotic spirit. Here are 5 tips to do it right.

White is such a clean refreshing palette to base you outfit on.It is cool crisp and comfortable.Finish it off with a touch of red and blue.It is one of the key colors for this Summer and is now a year round color.Check out the White Hero Jacket that goes with everything my design for Storyline Collection.https://storylinecollection.com/products/hero-jacket

Picking one motif and making it your central theme, creates a look that is sophisticated and polished, take a cue from these celebrities and create just one focal point to your outfit.Mix this with one of two classic american fabrics, chambray or denim.

Instead of just draping yourself in a flag which concerns some people as being too much or disrespectful, designers have created artistic interpretations that capture the spirit of it while respecting it.Look for something that is more interesting and flattering.Tie dye versions are the must have.

There are so many fabulous accessories out there that feature the flag.Go for a great head to toe solid white, red or blue outfit and then punch it with a flag bag or shoe.Subtle but very effective in creating a stylish outfit.I usually tend to take this route myself. There are so any fantastic options.

With all the creativity that is going on with nails, this is the place to go crazy. So get some patriotic nail art and pair with a crisp white shirt and a great pair of jeans to get the ultimate understated wow outfit.

The great news is all of these tips work for the men in your life as well maybe not so much tip number 5 but I know a few rockstar dudes that can make it work.I got a great tee from J Crew, keeping it simple.

But the main thing to remember is to celebrate what an amazing country we are because it is our diversity that makes us so great.

Happy Independence Day

Hello Storyline Sport!

After 15 months in the making Storyline’s Sport Capsule is finally here. This has been one of the longest projects that I have worked on with lots of twists and turns. So it is with great pleasure that I share some of the ideas and concepts that went into creating it.

For those of you who are not familiar with Storyline Collection it is a brand new capsule wardrobing concept that I co-created with my friend Amy Lamphere. Here is the link to the story behind it https://storylinecollection.com/pages/about-storyline

I had already started seeing the lines between our work life, our active life and our hang out life getting blurred where your home becomes your gym or your office and you go to hang out straight from excercising. So I wanted to create something that flowed through out you day.Little did I know that it would become the norm.So the first order of the day was that it had to be versatile, comfortable and look good.

The next thing was that it had to work for a number of activities, gone are that days of tennis whites and golf attire. This collection needed to perform in multiple venues.

Finally it had to breath, move and work.

The first task was developing the right fabric that held you in, allowed you to move and was comfortable to wear all day long.I worked with our mill to create a tech fabric that was wicking(moves moisture away from your skin so that you do not feel all sweaty) and antimicrobial. The problem with tech fabrics is that the often feel slick and slippery which is a feeling I do not love so by adding a very light brushing it allowed it to feel more cozy.

Once I got the fabric right it was all about finding the key pieces that a woman would wear everyday. That started with the creation of the pant.I talked to over a 100 women as to what their perfect pant is or could be.Many of the women had one that they really loved and shared with me but it often had one or two things missing.Pants from Jockey Person to Person,Lululemon,Athleta and the Gap were brought to my attention.I asked them detailed questions and right to figure out what they liked about each pant and incorporate it into my design to create the perfect pant.My key learning was that the pant had to look flawless from both the front and the back and had to be able to work from breakfast to dinner. Most of my contributors did not mind changing their tops throughout the day but really did not want to change their pants. For more go to https://storylinecollection.com/products/perfect-pant

The next key item was the jacket here to there were so many great ideas that were shared with me but finally the most important features were versatility and comfort.Everyone also said pocket’s were really important. Here is a link to the jacket https://storylinecollection.com/products/hero-jacket

My all time favourite clothing item is a t shirt (last count I own about 120 of them).I wear them 24 hours a day 7 days a week so I wanted to create a version for this capsule. This one is in a cotton blend tech fabric it fits close to the body like an athletic one should so if you like it looser go up one size.I really had fun with the graphic here instead of an active graphic I went with drawings of the most opulent items a woman can own,an opera cape and a ballgown skirt. So why not look fabulous when you are on the go.

If you want to add a bit of fashion flair do add one to your wardrobe https://storylinecollection.com/products/fashion-tee

Rounded up the capsule my adding a great cropped legging and a sporty skirt

I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I enjoyed creating it for you.

Ciao for now!

How to throw the right shade!

The key to looking fab this summer while protecting your eyes is to find the right pair of sunglasses. Here are the Five things you must keep in mind when shopping for your perfect pair.Sunnies as the Australians call them are a must have accessory.

If you are interested in the outfit that I designed go to https://storylinecollection.com/

Face Flattery

The shape of your frame must flatter your face. There are four common face shapes,Oval,Round,Square and Heart.

If you are not sure of your face shape, the simplest way to find out  is look in your bathroom mirror, make sure your hair is pulled back and trace around your face with a piece of soap. Step away and you will see your face shape.

If your face is Oval

Wear a frame that is wider than the broadest part of your face.

Keep the overall size in balance with your face.

Lucky you most shapes will flatter your face.Your face is similar to an hourglass body you can get away with anything.

Look to Jessica Alba, Gwen Stefani and Beyoncé for inspiration, they all have oval faces.

If your face is Round

Oversize, Rectangular and Angular Frames offset your roundness.Try a statement frame.

Be inspired by Michelle Williams and Selena Gomez.

Your face can take strong details and fun color.

If your face is Square

Circular frames are the best for you and do avoid hard edges.

Make sure you balance your face shape.

Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow are your role models.

Go for soft colors and tonal lenses.

If your face is Heart shaped

Rimless frames,Cateyes and Aviators work best to compliment wide cheekbones.

You can go for some of the glamorous oversized Hollywood type frames.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are your go to girls for inspiration.

Color

Overall stick to colors that look best in clothing  and translate that  to sunglasses. Pay attention to how they work with your hair color as well.White is trending right now but before you invest in a pair make sure it works with your wardrobe and you have a tan.

Fit

When looking at how they fit make sure that they do not slide down the nose and cause and pinching or discomfort. They should stay on when you turn your face from side to side.Look at the side view, the arms should fit nicely behind your ears. Some of this can be adjusted but you are better off picking a close to perfect pair to start with.

Quality

Pay attention to,the arms they should be strong, the hinges should feel smooth and they should feel substantial. It is also important that they offer the right UV protection.Go for the best quality you can afford unless you are the type that easily loses them.

Trend

Sunglass trends come and go.Some are classics and have been around forever. You can never go wrong with a classic pair of Aviators or a statement Cat Eye.It is always fun to have a couple of on trend sunnies for a touch of glam.

Here are this Summer’s Top Trends.

Think of your sunglasses as the cherry on the sundae, your outfit is perfectly good without them but the right ones just put it over the top.

Dressing for Zoom!

The one thing we have left to dress for right now is our Zoom calls.Dressing for Zoom is slightly different than dressing for a normal work day.

What are the differences?

1.Offices tend to be a little more formal,it would be strange to be taking a Zoom call in a tailored suit from home.

2.Your outfit has to multitask as between calls you may be a cook, a teacher ,a referee or even a PE instructor.

3.The focus is on the top half but wearing something on the bottom does help.

4.Your look has to be professional and casual at the same time.

With a little planning and some last minute effort you can look sensational on your call

Here is how you do it.
  • Start with a great base outfit that embodies your shape and style.Make sure you Zoom outfit reflects how you normally dress for work
  •  Keep it Simple-no fussy detail or lines
  •  Make it Streamlined-great fabric that does not wrinkle
  • Monochromatic-dark colors in rich tones of blue, red, pink, grey and black look best
  • Comfortable- fits your body, elastic waistbands and styles that drape without cling

What to avoid at all costs
  • Busy prints-they can pixelate on camera and are distracting
  • Stiff fabrics-can wrinkle and pull
  • Green and Yellow-unless you have a great tan they can wash you out
  • Ill-fitting and Tight clothing-If you are uncomfortable people can sense it

Once you have your outfit on look in the mirror and make sure it meets the following criteria

It should do the following

  • Make you feel Confident
  • Look Beautiful
  • Be Pulled Together
  • Read Chic
  • Flattering to you on camera,do a quick check on your computer or phone

Just before your call-set an alarm 5 minutes before start time and do the following

CHANGE OUT OR ADD ONE ITEM-this elevates your all day look a notch

  • Replace a tee shirt with soft dressy top
  • Add a jacket or a cardigan for instant polish

ADD AN ACCESSORYthis gives your look a little more polish, never add sunglasses or hair accessories they can be distracting

  • Put on a flattering necklace
  • Add some interesting earrings
  • Add a scarf close to your neck

TIP-you can balance your face shape and complement it by adding a necklace that hits your flattering neck point here is how.

APPLY A TOUCH OF COLOR-it is unrealistic to be walking around you house with a full face of makeup so..

Apply a touch of muted eyeshadow

Add a sharp lipstick in an appropriate color(stay away from red)

Dust your cheeks with a soft blush

or just add a filter to your camera

BEFORE YOU HIT CONNECT

Check your background or create one on Zoom

Make sure your lighting is right,it should be to the side of you or in front never behind YOU

Check your microphone

Smile

If you feel like you do not have the right work from home wardrobe do check out my jersey capsule collection at Storyline Collection it is designed to look good on camera and keep you comfortable and stylish. It is a mix and match concept that will give you many Zoom outfits.
